Trading holiday and settlement holiday are not synonyms

A trading holiday means the relevant exchange segment does not run its normal session. A settlement holiday affects the movement of funds or securities through clearing and banking arrangements. One can occur without the other. A broker may accept orders while execution waits, or a trade may execute on a day whose later settlement schedule changes because of an intervening holiday.

The segment matters too. Equity cash, equity derivatives, currency, debt and commodities can have different calendars or partial closures. This page is framed around the Indian equity capital market. Anyone trading another segment should open the relevant exchange circular rather than assuming the table applies unchanged.

How to use the 2026 list safely

Check the date, holiday name and segment, then open the linked official source if money or delivery depends on it. Annual lists can be amended. An exchange may add a holiday, announce a disaster-recovery test, or publish a special session after the original circular. The imported rows include source links and identify additions where the calendar module records them.

Time zones matter for overseas investors. The dates and session references here use India Standard Time. A global market may trade while NSE and BSE are closed, allowing currency, commodities or overseas news to accumulate before the next Indian session. That gap can increase opening volatility without making its direction predictable.

Muhurat trading is a special-session exception

The 2026 Muhurat calendar date is Sunday, 8 November. That does not convert the day into a normal weekend session. The exact special-session timing was still pending as of 27 August 2026 and must be taken from the later exchange circular. This page displays that pending status explicitly.

Planning orders and cash around a closure

Avoid leaving a time-sensitive obligation to the final session without checking settlement. Sale proceeds may not be withdrawable on the same schedule as the trade, and a purchase close to a record date depends on settlement rules. Corporate actions can also use dates that fall near weekends or holidays, so the issuer filing and exchange calendar must be read together.

For derivatives, expiry and holiday adjustments require the contract-specific exchange notice. Do not infer that every expiry simply moves one day in the same direction. The F&O expiry calendar provides the current contract schedule, while the dividend calendar supplies announced record dates.

• Confirm the market segment, not only the holiday name.
• Check settlement and bank calendars for cash needs.
• Open the latest circular for special or revised sessions.
• Verify broker cut-offs and completed order status.

A closed market is a research day, not a forecast

A holiday can be useful for reading annual reports, comparing results and updating a watchlist without a moving quote. It does not provide advance knowledge of the reopening. News accumulated during the closure can be positive, negative or mixed, and the opening price will incorporate market expectations and available liquidity.
