The formula, in full

Pivot = (previous high + previous low + previous close) ÷ 3. R1 = 2 × pivot − low. S1 = 2 × pivot − high. R2 = pivot + (high − low). S2 = pivot − (high − low). R3 = high + 2 × (pivot − low). S3 = low − 2 × (high − pivot). Nothing is fitted, forecast or adjusted — which is precisely why these levels are shared vocabulary across trading desks: everyone's arithmetic agrees.

How to actually use pivot levels

Pivots are most useful as a map of the day's territory: is the index trading above or below its pivot, and which levels sit nearby if the move extends? They gain whatever short-term relevance they have from attention — enough participants watch the same numbers that reactions can cluster near them — and lose it just as quickly on trending days, when price walks through R1 and R2 without a pause. The support and resistance chapter explains why levels drawn from actual price history carry more weight than any formula, and the expiry calendar tells you the days when index behaviour around levels is at its noisiest.

Pivot level questions

How are these support and resistance levels calculated?

They are classic floor-trader pivots. The pivot is the average of the previous session’s high, low and close; R1 is twice the pivot minus the low, S1 twice the pivot minus the high; R2/S2 add and subtract the previous session’s full range from the pivot; R3/S3 extend the same arithmetic once more. Every terminal that computes classic pivots from the same OHLC produces exactly these numbers.

Are pivot levels the same as chart support and resistance?

No. Pivots are arithmetic on yesterday’s prices — mechanical, identical for everyone. Chart support and resistance are levels where price actually reversed repeatedly, drawn from the chart itself. Pivots matter partly because many participants watch the same numbers, which can make them briefly self-fulfilling; chart levels carry more history. When do these numbers update?

Every evening after NSE publishes the day’s official index OHLC. The levels shown apply to the next trading session and stay fixed all day — that is the nature of pivots, computed once from a finished session.

Should I trade bounces off these levels?

This page will not tell you to. A pivot is a reference line, not a promise of a reversal; prices slice through pivots routinely, especially on trending days. SEBI’s own study found most retail derivative traders lose money — treat these numbers as shared vocabulary for reading the day, not as instructions.
