What makes a breakout worth investigating
Price pressing against resistance shows demand has absorbed much of the available supply at that level. An upward-sloping trend and expanding volume make the setup more informative, because the move is not relying on price proximity alone.
The 20-session high is only a short-term boundary. Before acting, zoom out to the weekly chart. A candidate can clear a one-month high and still run directly into a much larger six-month or all-time resistance zone.
Plan for false breakouts
A breakout can trade above resistance intraday and close back inside the range. It can also succeed briefly before news or broad-market weakness reverses it. Waiting for a close, a retest or a second session of confirmation reduces some false signals but can produce a later entry.
Define invalidation before considering upside. If the distance to a logical invalidation point is too large for the intended position size, the setup is not suitable even when every screening condition is true.
Checks before using this screen
- Confirm the exchange announcement and results calendar for event-driven moves.
- Review liquidity using traded value and spread—not share volume alone.
- Zoom out to the weekly chart for larger support and resistance zones.
- Define an invalidation level and position risk before considering an entry.
- Recheck fundamentals; a technical condition does not repair a broken business thesis.
FAQ
Questions about this screen
Is a near-breakout stock already a buy?
No. It is a research candidate meeting stated price, trend and volume conditions. Resistance, liquidity, news and risk still require review.
Why use a 20-session high?
It provides a consistent short-term boundary covering roughly one trading month. Longer weekly resistance remains important.
Why require volume and SMA 50?
Volume tests participation, while price above SMA 50 adds medium-term trend context. Neither condition guarantees success.
