RVNL share price today
Rail Vikas Nigam executes railway electrification, new lines, doubling, bridges, workshops and other infrastructure. It was built as a Ministry of Railways project vehicle and is now pursuing competitively bid and non-rail work as well.
The public narrative is a huge railway order book. The financial reality is a thin-margin contractor whose FY26 operating profit fell 32%. At roughly 61 times earnings and 5.5 times book, the share needs a profit recovery, not merely more order announcements.
Recent quarters show the margin problem
| Standalone, ₹ crore | Jun 2025 | Sep 2025 | Dec 2025 | Mar 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 3,925 | 4,935 | 4,504 | 6,648 |
| Operating profit | 79 | 211 | 230 | 220 |
| OPM | 2.0% | 4.3% | 5.0% | 3.3% |
| Net profit | 128 | 196 | 264 | 212 |
March revenue was the strongest quarter in this set, yet operating profit did not increase with it. A 3.3% operating margin leaves little protection against cost overruns, delayed billing or a change in project mix.
RVNL’s June 2026 result was due on 11 August when this article was prepared. The live article should therefore be read with the next result, not treated as if March numbers are current forever.
FY26 reversed the earlier earnings trend
| Standalone, ₹ crore | FY22 | FY23 | FY24 | FY25 | FY26 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 19,382 | 20,282 | 21,733 | 19,869 | 20,012 |
| Operating profit | 1,182 | 1,244 | 1,346 | 1,104 | 749 |
| OPM | 6% | 6% | 6% | 6% | 3.7% |
| Net profit | 1,087 | 1,268 | 1,463 | 1,189 | 800 |
Sales were almost flat over three years while profit declined. Other income of ₹806 crore was larger than operating profit in FY26, which makes headline P/E look better than the construction operation alone deserves.
Order book size is not order book quality
An engineering order earns value only if it has adequate margin, land and design readiness, timely client certification and manageable working capital. Railway projects can be politically important and still produce weak shareholder returns.
Diversification into metros, roads, ports and overseas work can expand the addressable market. It can also add execution risk outside RVNL’s original strength. New orders should be judged on client quality, funding, margin and completion schedule rather than press-release value.
The order-to-earnings bridge
An order becomes revenue only after design approval, site handover, materials, labour and customer certification. Revenue then becomes cash only after the client pays. Each bridge can fail independently. This is particularly relevant because Screener flags debtor days rising from roughly 50 to 99 and working-capital days moving in the same direction.
Suppose RVNL wins ₹10,000 crore of work at a 4% operating margin. Before tax, interest and overhead, that creates only ₹400 crore of operating profit spread over the execution period—not ₹10,000 crore of value. This simple arithmetic is why order announcements should never be compared directly with market cap.
FY26 other income exceeded operating profit, so our valuation starts with a normalised core margin and adds conservative other income. A return to 6% margin would matter because the revenue base is large; remaining near 4% would leave the share dependent on a high P/E.
The numbers
| Metric | Screener snapshot |
|---|---|
| Market capitalisation | ₹48,660 Cr |
| P/E · price/book | 60.8 · 5.49 |
| Book value per share | ₹42.5 |
| ROE · ROCE | 9.16% · 11.0% |
| Dividend yield | 0.73% |
| 52-week range | ₹220 – ₹401 |
The mismatch is clear: a single-digit ROE business is valued at a high-growth multiple. The market expects the FY26 setback to be temporary.
What the next result must answer
The June 2026 result was scheduled for 11 August, one day after this research snapshot. Readers should update four fields when it is published: execution-led revenue growth, operating margin, receivables and order inflow from competitively bid work. A profit beat driven mainly by other income would be lower quality than a modest beat driven by core margin.
Our base target assumes FY27 begins the recovery but does not immediately return to peak FY24 profit. The bull target needs both margin and order conversion; the bear target assumes the business remains relevant while valuation resets toward an ordinary contractor multiple.
RVNL share price target 2026 to 2030
The bear case assumes margins stay near 4% and order inflow does not translate into earnings. The base case assumes revenue recovery and a return to 5–6% operating margin. The bull case requires successful diversification, faster execution and better working-capital discipline.
What would change our mind
Operating margin: a sustained return above 5.5% would be the clearest sign that FY26 was temporary.
Order inflow versus revenue: announcements must convert into executed sales, not simply replenish a distant pipeline.
Receivables: Screener flags debtor days and working-capital days rising. Cash conversion should improve before the multiple deserves to expand.
Competitive bidding: more competitively won work can reduce nomination risk, but only if bidding discipline protects margin.
Should you buy at the current price?
RVNL remains strategically relevant, but strategic relevance is not a valuation. At the current multiple we prefer evidence of earnings recovery. The signed-in panel shows our entry range and scenario table.
FAQ
What is the RVNL target for 2030? The member table gives bear, base and bull values. The base case is deliberately modest because FY26 profit declined.
Is RVNL debt free? No. Project businesses use borrowings and working capital; interest was ₹417 crore in FY26.
Why did RVNL profit fall? Revenue stagnation and operating-margin compression were the main reported drivers.
Is the railway capex theme enough to buy? No. Entry price, project mix, execution and cash collection determine shareholder return.
