High dividend stocks today

50 NSE shares yield at least 3% on dividends declared in the twelve months to , out of 708 liquid shares that declared a dividend in rupees per share. For scale, the median payer yields 0.55% — so this is roughly the top 7% of dividend payers.

The rule this page uses. Trailing dividend per share ÷ latest close × 100. The numerator is every dividend in NSE's corporate-actions feed with an ex-date between 17 October 2025 and 16 October 2026, in rupees per share as the exchange stated it. The denominator is that security's close in the sec_bhavdata_full file for the latest session. A share is ranked when the result is at least 3% and the day's turnover was at least ₹5 crore. Every declaration is restated for any bonus or split with an ex-date after it, so the dividend and the price are in the same share count — a ₹10 dividend declared before a 1:1 bonus is ₹5 per share held today. A bonus of preference shares, which never divides the equity price, is excluded from that restatement. ETFs, REITs, InvITs and government securities are excluded. Declarations the exchange expressed as a percentage of face value rather than in rupees are not converted and are counted below instead, because that conversion needs the face value on the ex-date and a wrong one scales the yield by an order of magnitude.

What an ordinary dividend yield looks like

This is the context nearly every page on this topic leaves out. Across the 708 liquid NSE shares that declared a dividend in the trailing year:

0.55%median payer
1.25%75th percentile
2.62%90th percentile
3.56%95th percentile
6.25%99th percentile
21.01%highest

Read that before reading the table. A stock yielding 2% is around the market norm for a payer; one above 6.25% is in the top percentile and is worth checking for a special dividend or a price collapse before anything else. The exchange expressed 63 declarations in this window as a percentage of face value rather than in rupees per share; those are excluded from every figure here rather than guessed at.

The three columns to read before the yield column

A yield on its own is the least informative number in this table, because the same figure is produced by three different situations that call for completely different conclusions.

  • Declarations. A yield resting on one declaration is a different fact from the same yield resting on four. One payout in twelve months may be an annual final dividend, or it may be the only dividend the company has ever paid. Four suggests a policy.
  • The special tag. Where the exchange described a declaration as special, part of this yield is a one-off — an asset sale, an arbitration award, a return of surplus capital. It is arithmetically in the trailing figure and it will not be there next year.
  • Close. Read it against the stock's own recent range. A yield that has risen because the price fell is the commonest high-yield case in any Indian screen, and it is invisible in the yield column by construction.

What this screen cannot see

Two of the four tests that decide whether a dividend is sustainable are not in the exchange's corporate-actions feed at all, and no page built on that feed can apply them.

The payout ratio — dividends as a share of net profit — is the better sustainability signal, and a ratio above 100% means the company distributed more than it earned that year. Free cash flow is the harder test: a dividend paid out of operating cash flow after capital expenditure is structurally safer than one paid out of accounting profit. Both come from the company's own filed results. Our guide to screening for high dividend stocks sets out the full six-condition screen, of which this page applies the first.

The sector concentration to expect

A high-yield screen on the Indian market does not produce a diversified list, and this one will not either. It clusters in public sector undertakings, where government ownership makes dividends a fiscal channel; in regulated utilities and power, where returns are stable and capital needs predictable; and in mature commodity producers returning cash at the top of a cycle. That concentration is a property of the screen rather than a failure of it — but a portfolio assembled from this table alone is a bet on a few sectors and on government dividend policy, whatever it looks like counted by stock names.

Dividend yield questions

Which stocks pay the highest dividends in India?

It changes daily, because yield divides a dividend declared months ago by a price that moves every second. The table above is computed fresh from NSE's corporate-actions feed and the latest bhavcopy, covering declarations with an ex-date in the twelve months to 16 October 2026. Any list published without that date and that method is a snapshot of someone else's calculation on a day they did not state.

What is a good dividend yield in India?

Lower than most readers expect. Of the 708 liquid NSE shares that declared a parseable dividend in the trailing year, the median yields 0.55% and only the top 1% clear 6.25%. Indian companies have historically retained earnings for growth rather than distributed them, so the broad market yields well under global norms.

Why does a high dividend yield often mean a falling stock?

Because the price is the denominator. A company that holds its dividend while its share price halves doubles its yield without changing its policy at all. The highest-yielding names in any Indian screen are disproportionately stocks that have fallen hard, and the yield is reporting the fall. That is why this page shows the number of declarations and flags special dividends rather than ranking on yield alone.

Does this list include special or one-off dividends?

Yes, and it marks them. A company that sold a division or won an arbitration may declare a one-off dividend many times its usual payout, and every trailing-yield screen in the market will show it at a spectacular yield for the next twelve months. Rows containing a declaration the exchange described as "special" carry a tag, because that part of the yield will not repeat.

How is the dividend adjusted for bonus issues and stock splits?

A dividend of ₹10 declared before a 1:1 bonus is ₹5 per share held today, because there are twice as many shares. This page divides every historical declaration by the cumulative bonus and split ratio between its ex-date and now, so the dividend and the price are in the same share count. Rows where that mattered are marked. A bonus of preference shares is never applied to the equity figure.

Are dividends taxed in India?

Since 2020 they are taxed in the recipient’s hands at their slab rate, with TDS deducted by the company above a per-company threshold. That means the same stock has a different after-tax yield for every holder: a 5% gross yield is 3.5% at a 30% slab. No published yield figure can account for this because it depends on the reader, not the share.

Is a high dividend yield a reason to buy a stock?

This page does not say so and cannot. It applies a stated, mechanical rule to exchange-published data and prints the result with its distribution. Whether a payout is affordable depends on the payout ratio and cash flow, which are in the company’s filings rather than in this feed, and whether a stock is worth owning is a judgement no screen makes.
