Shanthi Gears share price today

Shanthi Gears

Anyone checking the Shanthi Gears share price in September 2026 is looking at a chart sitting on its own ceiling. At the 10 September 2026 close, Yahoo Finance showed ₹736.90, which was also the stock’s 52-week high. The 52-week low, ₹386.65, is barely more than half of that. Market capitalisation was about ₹5,653 crore, trailing EPS ₹8.35 and book value per share ₹57.36. That works out to roughly 88.25 times trailing earnings and 12.84 times book.

The awkward part is what happened underneath the price. Yahoo Finance’s year-on-year readings at the same date show revenue down 14.4% and earnings down 56.8%. So the multiple has expanded while the earnings it is applied to have been shrinking. A company can be excellent and still be expensive, and those two facts have to be held at the same time here.

Shanthi Gears is a Coimbatore gearbox maker founded in 1960, employing 479 people, and operating as a subsidiary of Tube Investments of India Limited. It has no debt and about ₹216 crore of cash. The question this note works through is not whether the business is sound. It is what rate of earnings recovery and what durable multiple would have to hold for the current price to make arithmetic sense.

What Shanthi Gears actually makes

The company designs, manufactures, supplies and services gears and gearboxes for India, the United States, Europe and other markets. The product list runs from helical and bevel-helical units through worm, extruder and cooling-tower gearboxes to planetary gearboxes and geared motors. It also supplies loose gears and pinions, special-purpose gearboxes, and castings in grey iron, phosphor bronze, aluminium bronze, leaded bronze and copper alloy. Alongside the hardware it offers installation support, refurbishment and on-site service.

Business layerRepresentative offeringCustomer problem solvedEconomic characteristic
Standard power transmissionHelical and bevel-helical gearboxesReducing speed and multiplying torque on a drive trainCatalogue-led, competitive, volume-sensitive
Application-specific unitsWorm, extruder, cooling-tower and planetary gearboxesMatching a gearbox to an unusual duty cycleEngineered to order, higher specification content
Loose gears and pinionsGears, pinions, special gearboxesReplacing a worn element inside existing machineryReplacement-driven, less tied to new capex
CastingsIron and copper-alloy castingsSupplying housings and blanks in-houseVertical integration, absorbs fixed cost
Aftermarket servicesInstallation, refurbishment, on-site workRestoring a plant to running condition quicklyRecurring, margin-supportive, relationship-led

The end markets are the whole cycle in one list: steel, cement, sugar, cranes and material handling, power, paper, rubber and plastics, off-highway and mining, process industries, compressors, railways, textiles and aerospace. That spread is genuine diversification within industrials, but it is not diversification away from industrials. When Indian capital expenditure across those sectors slows, orders for new drives slow with it, and only the refurbishment and spares side offers a partial cushion.

The five-week re-rating that changed the valuation

The most useful thing in the record is that this name was measured twice, five weeks apart, with very different results. Screener-derived figures captured on 5 August 2026 and the Yahoo Finance figures captured on 10 September 2026 describe the same company at two very different prices.

Measure5 August 2026 capture10 September 2026 captureWhat moved
Market capitalisation₹3,151 Cr₹5,653 CrUp roughly 79% in five weeks
Trailing P/E46.8188.25Nearly doubled

Trailing EPS₹8.75₹8.35Slightly lower, not higher
52-week high₹592.30₹736.90A new high was set in between
Position versus 52-week highAbout 32% belowAt the highThe discount closed entirely
Dividend yield1.22%0.71%Falls mechanically as price rises

Read across that table and the conclusion is uncomfortable but plain: every ratio moved because the share price moved, not because the earnings did. Trailing EPS actually stepped down from ₹8.75 to ₹8.35 over the same window. A re-rating of that speed on flat-to-lower earnings is a statement about expectations, and expectations are the part of a valuation that can reverse fastest. If you want the mechanics of why the denominator matters as much as the numerator, the P/E ratio guide sets it out.

Revenue and profit: what the annual record shows

Here the note has to be honest about its own limits. No full Screener financial tables were captured for this name. The multi-year figures below come from Yahoo Finance’s annual rows plus the Screener-derived summary dated 5 August 2026, and the annual series has gaps: FY21, FY25 and FY26 rows were not captured at all. There is also no quarter-by-quarter profit series available for this note, so none is presented. Treat the table as a sketch of direction, not a complete financial history.

Financial yearRevenueNet profitReading
FY20₹242 CrNot capturedThe pre-pandemic base
FY22₹337 CrNot capturedRecovery in industrial demand
FY23₹446 Cr₹67 CrVolume and pricing both improving
FY24₹536 Cr₹82 CrProfit growing faster than sales
Trailing twelve months to 10 Sep 2026₹499 CrAbout ₹64 CrBelow the FY24 annual figure

The trailing twelve-month revenue of ₹499 crore sits below the FY24 annual revenue of ₹536 crore. Trailing profit works out near ₹64 crore from EPS of ₹8.35 across roughly 7.67 crore shares, against ₹82 crore reported for FY24. That is the same story the year-on-year growth readings tell, and it is the single most important fact in this note.

Set against that, the longer-run compounding record captured on 5 August 2026 is strong: a five-year sales CAGR of 19.2% and a five-year profit CAGR of 31.95%. Both are real. Both also describe a period that ended before the current downturn in the trailing numbers. A five-year profit CAGR near 32% is not a rate any gearbox maker sustains indefinitely, and using it as a forward assumption would be the classic error of extrapolating the good part of a cycle.

The balance sheet is the strongest part of the case

Balance-sheet signal10 September 2026 readingWhy it matters
Total debtNilNo interest burden, no refinancing risk
Total cash₹216 CrFunds a downturn without touching shareholders
Book value per share₹57.36Implies price to book near 12.84 times
Shares outstandingAbout 7.67 croreA tight equity base, no visible dilution
Promoter holding74.81%Parent control is firm
Promoter shares pledgedNilNo encumbrance to unwind
Dividend yield0.71%Income is incidental at this price

A debt-free industrial with over ₹200 crore of cash and a parent holding almost three-quarters of the equity does not carry solvency risk. Subtracting cash from market capitalisation gives an enterprise value near ₹5,437 crore, so the cash covers less than 4% of what the market is paying. That is the point: the balance sheet removes one category of risk entirely, but it removes almost none of the valuation risk. Investors who want the debt lens in general terms will find it in the debt-to-equity ratio guide.

Returns on capital, and why they are dated

The return ratios are the reason this business has admirers. The Screener-derived capture of 5 August 2026 records ROCE of 25.55%, a five-year average ROCE of 29.94%, ROE of 19.00% and an operating margin of 17.74%. For a capital-goods manufacturer with foundry operations, a five-year ROCE near 30% is a genuinely unusual number and points to pricing discipline, low working-capital leakage and an aftermarket that does not compete on price alone.

Two qualifications belong next to those figures. First, they were captured on 5 August 2026 and therefore describe the period before the decline visible in the trailing numbers. Return ratios are lagging measures; a 56.8% fall in earnings will pull them down when they are next recomputed. Second, the margin readings are not on a single basis. Yahoo Finance reports EBITDA of ₹87 crore on revenue of ₹499 crore, which is roughly 17.4% before depreciation, alongside an operating margin of 8.76% measured after it. Both can be correct; they simply answer different questions. The return on equity guide explains why the definition you pick changes the conclusion you reach.

Valuation at the research cut-off

Dividend yield0.71%The case does not rest on income
PEG1.47From the 5 August capture, at the lower price
EV / EBITDA28.33Also from the 5 August capture

The last two rows need a warning label. PEG of 1.47 and EV/EBITDA of 28.33 were both computed in the 5 August capture, when market capitalisation was ₹3,151 crore. On the 10 September price they would be materially higher. Quoting a PEG below 1.5 for a stock trading at 88 times trailing earnings would be misleading, so the date on those two numbers is doing real work.

Valuation framework

The scenario model starts with TTM EPS of ₹8.35. For each year it applies EPS_TTM × (1 + growth)^(year − 2026 + 112/365) × exit P/E, then rounds the result to the nearest ₹5. The 112/365 factor represents the fraction of the first forecast year remaining from 10 September to 31 December. Dividends are excluded.

ScenarioAnnual EPS growthExit P/EBusiness interpretation
Bear7%30×The industrial cycle stays soft, earnings recover slowly and the rating returns toward a normal capital-goods multiple
Base13%50×Orders normalise, margins hold near historic levels and the market keeps paying a quality premium, but a smaller one
Bull18%60×Replacement demand plus exports drive a fast earnings rebound and the premium rating largely persists

Every exit multiple here sits below the 88.25 times the stock trades at today. That is deliberate. A framework that assumed both a rapid earnings recovery and the permanent survival of a record multiple would simply be restating the current share price with extra steps. The growth rates are also cut well below the five-year profit CAGR of 31.95%, because that figure was earned off a low base and through an up-cycle. These are scenarios, not probability-weighted forecasts, and the method behind them is described in full in how to value a stock.

Shanthi Gears share price target 2026 to 2030

The grid above is generated only from the disclosed EPS, growth and exit-multiple inputs. It does not model a change in the parent’s shareholding, an acquisition, a fresh equity issue, a special dividend, an order-book disclosure, currency effects on export revenue or any exceptional item. It also cannot know when the industrial cycle turns, which is the variable that matters most for a gearbox maker. Refresh the inputs after the next reported results rather than carrying these assumptions forward unchanged.

What the Shanthi Gears share price already assumes

Work backwards from ₹736.90 and the implied expectations become clear. At 88 times trailing earnings, the market is not paying for the ₹64 crore of trailing profit. It is paying for a profit figure some way above that, arriving reasonably soon, and it is assuming the rating does not normalise while it waits.

That embeds three separate bets: that the current revenue and earnings decline is a trough rather than a trend, that the recovery restores the operating margins recorded in the 5 August capture, and that a cyclical capital-goods manufacturer continues to command a premium multiple through the recovery. Any one of those can be true. Requiring all three simultaneously is what makes the starting price demanding rather than merely full.

Risks that can break the thesis

The first risk is the starting multiple itself: earnings can grow steadily and the share still return nothing, because the de-rating absorbs the growth. This is the dominant risk here, and it does not require anything to go wrong at the company. A rating of this order is usually attached to businesses with visible multi-year order books, structural share gains or software-like economics, none of which is what a mechanical drives maker sells into cyclical Indian industry.

The second is the cycle. Steel, cement, sugar, paper, mining and material handling all order drives when they are expanding. A pause in Indian industrial capital expenditure shows up in this order book directly, and the trailing revenue decline of 14.4% suggests that pause has already begun. The third is operating leverage in reverse: a manufacturer with foundry assets and fixed overhead sees margins fall faster than sales, which is consistent with earnings dropping 56.8% while revenue dropped 14.4%.

Beyond those, the company is small. A market capitalisation of ₹5,653 crore with 74.81% held by the parent leaves a modest free float, so price moves in both directions can be amplified. Input costs for steel and alloys, competition from larger global gear manufacturers, and customer concentration within any single end-industry are ordinary but real. Finally, this note is working with an incomplete financial record, and a fuller set of statements could change the reading in either direction.

What would change the picture

The case strengthens if trailing revenue turns back above the FY24 level of ₹536 crore, if profit recovers toward and past ₹82 crore, if operating margin returns to the high-teens on a consistent basis, and if ROCE holds near the 25% mark through the downturn rather than collapsing with it. Growth in the refurbishment and spares business would be particularly encouraging because that revenue is less dependent on new plant construction.

It weakens if revenue declines for a further year, if margins fall without a clear one-off explanation, if working capital expands faster than sales, or if the export contribution proves to be lumpy project work rather than a repeatable channel. A sustained fall in ROCE below the twenties would undermine the single strongest argument for paying any premium at all.

FAQ

What is the Shanthi Gears share price target for 2026?

The 2026 line of the scenario grid applies only the remaining 112 days of the year to trailing EPS of ₹8.35, then multiplies by each scenario’s exit P/E. It is a range of arithmetic outcomes under stated assumptions, not a forecast or a recommendation to transact.

What is the Shanthi Gears share price target for 2030?

The 2030 line compounds trailing EPS for roughly 4.3 years at 7%, 13% and 18% before applying exit multiples of 30, 50 and 60 times. The spread between the bear and bull outcomes is wide because both the growth rate and the multiple are uncertain, and the industrial cycle sits underneath both.

What does Shanthi Gears do?

It designs, manufactures and services gears and gearboxes, including helical and bevel-helical, worm, extruder, cooling-tower and planetary units, geared motors, loose gears and pinions, and iron and copper-alloy castings. It also provides installation support, refurbishment and on-site services. Customers span steel, cement, sugar, cranes, power, paper, mining, railways, textiles and aerospace.

Who are the promoters of Shanthi Gears?

Promoters held 74.81% of the equity at the 10 September 2026 reading, with no shares pledged. Yahoo Finance describes the company as a subsidiary of Tube Investments of India Limited. The company itself was founded in 1960 and is based in Coimbatore.

What is the NSE symbol for Shanthi Gears?

The NSE symbol is SHANTIGEAR. The Yahoo Finance ticker used for the quote and the figures in this note is SHANTIGEAR.NS. The company’s own site is shanthigears.com.

What are the main risks to the Shanthi Gears share price?

The largest is valuation: 88.25 times trailing earnings at the 52-week high leaves no cushion if the rating normalises. Next is the industrial cycle, since trailing revenue is already down 14.4% year on year and earnings down 56.8%. Operating leverage in reverse, a small free float and input-cost swings add to that.

Sources and methodology

Price, 52-week range, market capitalisation, trailing EPS, book value, cash, debt, employee count, shares outstanding, the trailing revenue and EBITDA figures, the year-on-year growth readings and the annual revenue and profit rows were captured from Yahoo Finance on 10 September 2026. The return ratios, operating margin, PEG, EV/EBITDA and the five-year sales and profit CAGRs come from Screener-derived figures captured earlier, on 5 August 2026, and are labelled as such wherever they appear because the share price moved sharply between the two dates. No complete Screener financial statement tables were available for this company, so the annual series has gaps at FY21, FY25 and FY26, and no quarterly profit series is presented. The business description, end-market list, founding year and parent-company relationship come from the company profile carried by Yahoo Finance. Everything after that point, including the choice of growth rates and exit multiples, the reading of the re-rating, the cycle interpretation and the risk ranking, is analytical judgment applied to those figures.
